The State Seal Of Kentucky

The state seal is a symbol that is used to represent the state of Kentucky. The official insignia was authorized in 1792, 6 months after Kentucky became a state. They can be found on many things such as the state flag and official state papers. The state seal is made up of many different parts. Here are some examples.

Commonwealth of Kentucky

In 1792 when Kentucky became the 15th state, it chose to remain a "commonwealth" when it separated from Virginia. Kentucky is 1 of 4 states to call itself a "commonwealth."

Motto

United we stand Divided we fall. The motto is believed to be from "The Liberty Song". The motto means that if we stay united and work together we will be a stronger state, and divided we would be weaker.

The Goldenrod

The Goldenrod is the state flower and is a wild flower commonly found in Kentucky. There are 30 of nearly 100 species of Goldenrod found in Kentucky.

The man on the right is from England and is coming to Kentucky. The man on the left is in buckskins and he is from the frontier. They are shaking hands uniting the "Commonwealth".
